Officer Injured After Intoxicated Driver Crashes Into Them On I-95: Police

A Connecticut State Trooper is recovering after a man crashed into his cruiser during a traffic stop in Middlesex County, authorities said.

Alvaro Portillo, age 32, of New London, is charged with operating under the influence, driving without a license, and other traffic violations from the Wednesday, Nov. 6, crash, State Police said. 

A trooper with their lights and sirens on was in the process of pulling a car over on I-95 in Westbrook just after 8 p.m. when Portillo crashed into the back of their patrol cruiser, authorities said. 

The trooper was taken to Middlesex Hospital Shoreline Clinic for a potential neck injury. 

Portillo failed a field sobriety test after the crash, police said. 

He was being held on a $15,000 bond, authorities said.
